Abstract

Understanding Islam for students at the elementary school level is a crucial aspect in the formation of character and spiritual values. Character building and the development of spiritual values require the encouragement of teachers to ensure that students can optimally comprehend and apply these values. This research discusses the methods teachers use to develop students' understanding of religion, the difficulties and conveniences experienced by teachers in enhancing students' religious comprehension, and the solutions to these challenges. This study employs a qualitative method with the primary source being Syahida Said, an Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teacher at SDN 011 Sangatta Selatan. The research findings indicate that several methods can be used by teachers to develop students' understanding through literature review and the assignment of relevant tasks. Additionally, it was found that there are challenges, such as the difficulty in reading Arabic script (Hijaiyah) and the lack of parental guidance, alongside other conveniences. Furthermore, the research results reveal ways to overcome these difficulties through more intensive learning approaches, support from parents, and extracurricular activities.
