Allegation of research misconduct
An-Nafis: Jurnal Ilmiah Keislaman dan Kemasyarakatan is committed to upholding academic integrity, research ethics, and transparency in scholarly publishing. The journal recognizes that research misconduct can undermine the credibility of academic publications and public trust in scholarly knowledge. Therefore, all allegations of research misconduct, whether identified before or after publication, will be handled fairly, objectively, confidentially, and in accordance with the principles and guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Types of Research Misconduct
Research misconduct refers to actions that compromise the originality, accuracy, reliability, or integrity of scholarly research. Such violations include, but are not limited to, data fabrication, data falsification, plagiarism, duplicate publication, inappropriate image manipulation, citation manipulation, unethical authorship practices, peer-review manipulation, and deliberate misrepresentation of research findings.
Data fabrication involves inventing data or research results that were never obtained through legitimate research procedures. Data falsification occurs when researchers manipulate research materials, processes, data, or findings in ways that misrepresent the actual results. Plagiarism involves using another person's ideas, words, data, or work without appropriate acknowledgment. Duplicate publication refers to publishing substantially overlapping research without proper disclosure or justification.
Other forms of misconduct include assigning authorship inappropriately, manipulating the peer-review process, and engaging in citation practices intended to distort the scholarly record. The journal considers these practices serious violations of research and publication ethics.
Procedures for Handling Allegations
The editorial team of An-Nafis: Jurnal Ilmiah Keislaman dan Kemasyarakatan follows established publication ethics principles and relevant COPE guidelines when addressing allegations of research misconduct. Allegations may be submitted by authors, reviewers, readers, editors, researchers, or other concerned parties.
Reports should provide sufficient information to support a preliminary assessment, including the title of the manuscript or published article, relevant author information, a description of the suspected violation, and any available supporting evidence.
Upon receiving an allegation, the editorial team will review the information and determine whether further investigation is necessary. When appropriate, the corresponding author and other relevant parties will receive an opportunity to respond and provide explanations, original research data, or supporting documentation.
The journal will assess each allegation impartially and will not presume misconduct before evaluating the available evidence. The editorial team will maintain confidentiality throughout the investigation to the extent reasonably possible and will protect the rights of all parties involved.
If the editorial assessment cannot resolve the concerns, the journal may seek advice from independent experts, research ethics committees, the authors' affiliated institutions, or other appropriate authorities. The journal may also cooperate with relevant institutions to establish the facts and determine the appropriate course of action.
Editorial Actions and Publication Integrity
When the investigation establishes that research or publication misconduct has occurred, the journal will take appropriate action based on the nature, severity, and consequences of the violation.
For manuscripts under review, the editorial team may suspend the review process, request clarification or revision, or reject the submission. For published articles, the journal may issue a correction, publish an expression of concern, or retract the article when the evidence justifies such action.
Retractions, corrections, and expressions of concern will be published transparently and linked to the affected article whenever possible. The relevant notice will explain the reasons for the editorial action while respecting applicable confidentiality and ethical requirements.
The journal distinguishes between honest errors and deliberate misconduct. Editorial decisions will remain proportionate to the evidence and consistent with recognized publication ethics standards. The journal will not impose a finding of misconduct solely because an author disagrees with an editorial decision or presents an alternative scholarly interpretation.
Reporting Research Misconduct
Individuals who suspect research misconduct in a manuscript submitted to or an article published by An-Nafis: Jurnal Ilmiah Keislaman dan Kemasyarakatan are encouraged to contact the editorial team through the journal's official communication channels.
Reports should include relevant bibliographic details, a clear description of the suspected misconduct, and supporting evidence where available. The journal encourages good-faith reporting and will assess each concern objectively, without unnecessary disclosure of the identities of those involved.
The editorial team will handle reports confidentially to the extent reasonably possible. It will also take appropriate measures to prevent unfounded allegations from causing unjustified harm to authors, reviewers, or other researchers.
